HOME-SF – New Housing for Families and Working People
HOME-SF is a new program introduced by Supervisor Katy Tang that will create 5,000 new units of permanently affordable housing over the next 20 years. The legislation also incentivizes the creation of new family-friendly housing of two or more bedrooms, housing that is currently underproduced. It passed unanimously at the Board of Supervisors.
We’re in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis that is pushing families and working people out of San Francisco. Now more than ever we need common-sense legislation like HOME-SF to create the new units that will result in more affordable housing.
Here’s how the program works: new developments that agree to make 30% of the units permanently affordable are allowed to build up to 20 ft taller than would otherwise be allowed. 40% of these new units are required to be two or more bedrooms. This legislation also creates the first affordable housing available for middle-class earners who have been hit hardest by the housing crisis. Working people and families had previously made slightly too much to qualify for affordable housing but not enough to be able to afford market-rate housing.
